El Nazar Church was a nice quick walk from Goreme a good space filler after other hikes or activities. I agree the fee is not really worth it for what you see. The custodian is a nice guy, however, and if you ask him, he may let you see the “hidden church” – its a semi-challenging 300m hike from this site, but its AMAZING !
A mi me gusto muchisimo capadocia pera saben?
St. Basil the Great: Saint Basil the Great (c. 330 – 379) is one of the most important influences on both Byzantine and Western monasticism. Before forming his own monastic community, he visited Egypt, Mesopotamia, Palestine and Syria, observing the monastic life and learning both from the positive and negative examples he encountered. He later composed his Asketikon for the members of the monastery he founded about the year 356 on the banks of the Iris river in Cappadocia. St Basil’s work entailed two sets of monastic regulations: the Lesser Asketikon and the Greater Asketikon. Correspondence exists between him and St. Gregory Nazianzen which gives further insight into the type of monastic life he established.
Loved this museum with all it’s little caves, churches, Nunnery and Monastery in the stunning landscape. We got the audio tour and it gave us all the information we needed. We did get to one section after paying the entry fee and to enter that particular section you had to pay another fee which annoyed us a bit. We didn’t bother as there was enough to see anyway.
The Open Air museum is a great opportunity to see some ancient caves within walking distance of Goreme town centre. The whole area is of course covered in caves but here the highlights are the religious wall paintings and murals which really enhance the atmosphere.
