The best of all the tours we did. The AC van, guide, driver, and lunch excellent.
Hagia Sophia is built in the sixth century and a christian church until the 1400's. It later became a mosque and is now a national museum. The dome and the wonderful interior will knock your socks off. Do not miss the view from the second floor. There are winding stairs that allow you to view the dome from a great vantage point.
The Grand Bazaar came with high expectations! We've been hearing about it for years, and couldn't wait to visit. It was a great place to take in the history, aromas, and friendly merchants, while picking up some spices and delicious Turkish Delights, a jellied candy. It's almost the national candy!
I did not know that part of it was still under construction, apart from that..this place is a history treasure. The building isn't well-maintained but you'd forget about once you dive into those historic pieces.
We had a lovely tour of Istanbul with our tour guide and the tour is so much better and less expensive than any group tour the cruise ships offer.
Hagia Sophia is lovely, and upon visiting, it becomes clear why people wait hours in line to see it. That said, it's worth going early in the morning (by 9:30 if possible) and trying to avoid the cruise ships.
Wow! I mean really! When you get to the Old Town in Istanbul, you rapidly understand that people are literally tripping over historical artefacts. The place is loaded with history. But this museum, I mean, it's packed with incredible pieces, some of which are in perfect condition.
By comparison with other Museums in UK, Europe and USA I rate the Istanbul Archaeology Museum as one of the best museums in the world. IT is currently in renovation so it is only going to get better. The Alexander sarcophagus, sculpted busts, mosaics and cuneiform scripts are as old as I have ever seen. The displays are well done…
This is a lovely museum complex, with a large central building housing all sorts of archaeological artefacts, a second museum of mosaics, and a third with finds from Mesapotamia (specifically tiles from the Gate of Ishtar in ancient Babylon). Overall, this is a delightful place because most of the tourists are busy with the more major sites.
Beautiful grounds, amazing pieces throughout the entire museum. There's a wonderful outdoor cafe that's the perfect spot to grab a coffee and sit amongst ancient sculptures…easy to get to from the historic part of town.
