We were lucky and to get a private half day tour “Istanbul Byzantine” and were grateful for our very friendly and knowledgeable guide. He picked us up from the hotel and we were driven directly to the Blue mosque to enter without queuing. We learn a lot about the culture of a different religion and to understand and respect it. I wouldn’t recommended it any other way. Our guide also pointed out some trustworthy vendors at the great Bazaar and even drove us to the ferry pier. Fantastic service and well worth the money. Very recommendable!
I've had the Hagia Sophia on my bucket list for over 25 years, so I was very disappointed to walk into it and find one whole side of the interior hidden by scaffolding. I accept, however, that old buildings need work!
Hippodrome is definitely a sight that most people stop and see before or after visiting the Blue Mosque as it is located to the side of the mosque. There are a number of Obelisk and Columns within the Hippodrome which was in fact the site for many chariot races.
Hagia Sophia a must see historic land mark from the Byzantine era, and old Constantinople. The church is the former Greek Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later an imperial mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its construction in 537 until 1453, it served as an Eastern Orthodox cathedral and seat of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.
A definite must see in Istanbul and hard to miss just opposite of the Hagia Sophia. If you like this you must not miss the Sülemanye Mosque.
As ist is a live Mosque the rules about proper dress code apply.
There are praying times during which the Mosque is closed for tourists. !
Whatever you do take the night time cruise ! The night shows the city all lit up, plus you get to see both continents on one ride, the old and the new.
We were staying on the Asian side of Istanbul. while they had a launch that would take guests across to the European side, we wanted to explore the little villages on both sides of the Bosphorus. So we took the City Ferry; we boarded Cengelkoy and just went up the strait.
Hagia Sophia ! Incredible ! This was the longest line we were subjected to while in Istanbul, but it was definitely worth it. I had done plenty of research beforehand, which turned out to be good because there is little to no information once inside. My recommendation: do your research on the history beforehand and just enjoy the stunning architecture.
Hagia Sophia is great place to see a historical monument dated so far back, the whole surrounding area makes its a worth while place to visit
It is a must see passage. The shores of the Bosphorus Strait have beautiful old and new houses, fortifications, the 'New Palace', etc. If it isn't a beautiful day wait if you can. There are two suspension bridges and below is the newly opened tunnel…dreamed of since the days of Leonardo da Vinci.
