I am not a religious person but there is definitely something about this place, you can feel at peace when you are here so either you are religious (more reasons to go) or not, this is a recommended place to visit.
Only 6km, we can do it… was our first thinking… however it was 6km climbing… I recomend to go by táxi or bus.
On the way the sight is great, but wen you arrive after 1 1/2 hour walk the virgin Mary's House is a vision… peacefull and quite mistic.
I sent emails asking for prices and options to create a private tour for our shore excursion. I was able to take a standard tour and customize it and it was less than half the price of the group tour shore excursion offered by our cruise. We met our private guide and driver as soon as we got off the ship. We first started with a drive out to the Virgin Mary’s House. Along the drive, we learned some interesting facts about the region and Turkey in general. Then, we reached Mary’s house and toured the site very interesting. Then it was off to Ephesus where we had a leisurely and informative tour through the amazing ruins. Make sure to get the added tour of the terrace houses. This is the most well preserved ancient ruins ever discovered.
Then it was off to St John’s Basilica and the Temple of Artimis to finish the tour. The tour was incredible and a highlight of our trip. I would highly recommend this private tour the price was very reasonable.
We visited the home of mary as part of our Biblical tour of ephesus with celebrity cruise lines. what a precious time we had there. our tour included a mass that was really special. our tour also provided small terra cotta urns for us to fill with holy water. i wish i could have tarried in the house.
In Izmir, we were picked up right at the cruise ship at the appointed time and boarded a large van for just the four of us. You can book the tour on-line ahead of time, and you can pick and choose the sights you want to see. Overall, more reasonable than the ship tours, and a lot more flexibility, this tour company is great.
Travelled to turkey last week and decided to book a private tour for my family, it was excelled. Brilliant sites and ruins, tour guide spoke brilliant English and was a lot of fun.
I actually walked up from Ephesus (yes all the way)…other than good exercise and great views on the way up, this 'attraction' was pretty ho-hum imo (bit like Ephesus). It was also covered with tourists, mostly of the pious sort that might be God fearing, but are extremely arrogant and rude when it comes to giving you room to walk…
If you are the least bit Christian, you can't help but feel that you are visiting a holy place- the house that Mary lived the remainder of her years. It is small and the cite has a lot of tourist items for sale, including purses that are designer knocks & the people are so friendly.
To see the house of the mother of Jesus near Ephesus was unbelievable!
There were 6 adults in our group. They picked us up at port they will bringing the wheelchair with. Very comfortable air conditioned vehicle. We had our own personal tour of Ephesus then a wonderful lunch. The site is difficult for wheelchairs due to the uneven marble road.
