Activity Info
The Sema (whirling dervishes) ceremony represents the mystical journey of man’s spiritual ascent through love and his search for truth and perfection. It is believed that once man has returned from his spiritual journey, he can love and be of service to all creatures surrounding him. Tonight, you have the opportunity to experience an authentic Cappadocian ceremony and witness an ancient Turkish ritual.
You will be collected from your accommodation in the Avanos, Goreme or Urgup area at approximately 21:00 and transported by luxury air-conditioned transport to the caravanserais, (caravan places). These abodes were built when trade across Turkey in medieval Seljuk times was dependent on camel trains. The buildings provided accommodation for the merchants and stabling for their animals. Today these ancient structures are the site of The Sema.
The ceremony lasts for one hour and during this time your friendly and professional English-speaking guide will talk you through the ceremony and introduce you to Serbet, a traditional religious libation. After a the performance, you will be transported back to your accommodation.

The dance is nice and interesting how they can round and round for minutes without getting dizzy. I also liked the music.
LIked it all how they manage not to get dizzy is beyond belief an experience everyone who travels to Cappadocia should take advantage of.
Seeing the Whirling Dervishes is a not-to-be-missed experience! Booked our tickets online after arriving in Cappadocia and were surprised to be given front row seats when we arrived. The Dervishes are really rather “other-worldly”, and it was an evening we won’t forget, even if it was done for tourists.
As the whirling Derwiches is not show but it is ritual and meditation I liked the way it is displayed here.
Small-scale, only 10 other people when we were there. Close your eyes and feel the voice of the singer!! The dance is impressive but you have to know the meaning of it.
Must see must! Lifetime experience! I have touched soul of sky with Dervish Ceremony.
Quote by Mevlana Jelalu’ddin Rumi on love and pain can describe that feeling: in love pain. We are pain and what cures pain, both. We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours. I want to hold you close like a lute, so that we can cry out with loving. Would you rather throw stones at a mirror? I am your mirror and here are the stones.
Defying all laws of equilibrium and gravity it was a spectacle to watch. Avoid this if you have restless kids or book when there is a good chance of them going off to sleep!
During my first visit to Turkey, as part of the tour, qwe visited Konya…..the Whirling Dervishes is a spiritual experience not to be missed. The origin of Sama is credited to Rumi, Sufi master and in whose name the Mevlevi Order was founded. The story of the creation of this unique form of dhikr tells that Rumi was walking through the town marketplace one day, when he heard the rhythmic hammering of the goldbeaters. It is believed that Rumi heard the dhikr, in English, “There is no god but Allah (The God)”, spoken by the apprentices beating the gold, and was so filled with happiness that he stretched out both of his arms and started spinning in a circle. With that, the practice of Sama and the dervishes of the Mevlevi Order were born. Like on any visit to another country acqaint yourself with the events you go and see – this way you will understand and enjoy it so much more.
I found this attraction by accident when I was trying so hard to find the place for a whirling dervishes dance in Cappadocia. This is actually a religious dance where the dancers are in rotation trance motion as they are devoting their soul and mind to God. A must see experience when you are in the Cappadocia.
Very interesting performance. Five dervishes spin in a ritual ceremony accompanied by musicians and chanters. For an hour straight the dervishes spin in a trans like state in ceremonial dress. Never experienced anything similar before. Definitely worth seeing.
