We cilmbed Mount Nemrut last April, while the snow was still blocking the road to the top and the wind was blowing so hard you could barely stand, but when we finally reached for the top… well it was wonderful. Breath-taking. The view of the giant status, half-covered with the snow. The silence, only broken by the wind. One of the best moment of my life.
We had a great time in Harran. The families were very hospitable and friendly. We were well fed and well taken care of. Everyone there was very kind and understanding. I would love to go back! 🙂
Mount Nemrut, is one of the many places and probabaly one of the most striking places in Southeastern Turkey to be visited .
For Nemrut, get prepared, it is cold although we have visited in the begining of September we had to wear heavily ( it was 40 degrees down and we were frying ) so wear several layers to get rid of excessive clothing fast. Secondly wear a good walking or trekking shoe. Get a torch it could get handy when climbing in the dark. Get water no drinks or toilets on the top lots of good shots will require a camera.
Nemrut, a world heritage site, worth to see so do not miss.
I am grateful to have visited and greatly enjoyed the UNIQUE experience I will honestly say that there are far more accessible and equally enjoyable sights to visit in Turkey–especially if time is tight in your itinerary.
Most unusual historical sight; a must see sight for anyone visiting Turkey. Worth the time and the effort. Get there for the sunrise, but make sure you dress for the cold chilling winds even in July and August. Terrific site, but should be protected better by the authorities.
Our guide was very friendly, helpful, and accomodating. The tour is well-run and worth it if you are pressed for time. You cover a lot of fascinating places in southeastern Turkey in a short span of time!
Getting there is not easy and is a journey. However, once you are there, it is rewarding. So there are actually two things to see while you are there: The sunrise and the statue remains. You MUST go there for the sunrise and you MUST bring a blanket or jacket to keep warm bc the winds up there are really strong! But once the sun comes up, it literally and figuratively warms you up!
Ok secondly, the statues that are facing the sunrise are really incredible once you realize how much of a hike it is to get up there because of their age and size.
Just as a sign of how good this place is, i changed my rating from 4 to 5 once i started to remember it! If you are in Turkey and within 4 hrs of this place, you would be a fool not to go.
Harran is just 50 km from Urfa. On the way you have to watch for the signs, since there are a few traffic signs only. We missed one,got lost, and ended up in a village just a couple of km from the Syrian boarder. It's is good to have a guide while in Harran.
Once you get the Nemrut you will see stone statues, ordered by King Antiochus, depicting Greek gods (facing west) and Persian gods (facing east). These go back to about 62 BC. The heads were previously located atop seated figures but have since fallen to the ground in front of them. Antiochus’s tomb is allegedly located beneath the tip of the mountain. We visited some outstanding sites in Eastern and Southern Turkey. By far the statues of Mount Nemrut were the highlight of our trip.
Nemrut Mountain and the god/godness sculptures on the the top of it are at the list of Unesco's World Heritage. The King of Komagene has built these sculptures here in order to let the sun go down and up under their feet. The graves of the king and his family is also at the top of this mountain.
