Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Turkey, in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point. The population of the town is 106,116. Çanakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait.
The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The “wooden horse” from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Çanakkale is the second city to be situated on two continents after Istanbul. However Çanakkale is closer to mid-division than Istanbul.
Most of the places in Çanakkale are in walking distance. There is a Tourist Information office several meters from ferryboat station (on the right if you are coming from the ferry). You can pick up a free tourist map of Çanakkale and the surrounding areas. They also have schedules of the minibuses to Troy and ferries to Bozcaada.
Must see places in Çanakkale

- Naval Museum
Çanakkale,
If interested in Gallipoli, the mueum is worth a visit, it adds to you understanding.
it takes at least 2-3 hours to visit this place. It is really impressive. another funny activity: there is a model trojan horse and it is possible to see inside the horse
Amazing stuff on show. Very cheap only 5TL. Only negative was that there was very little in English, it would have been easier to learn about all the artefacts.
While we were walking through the park we were stopped by the captain of the boat that stays anchored there and we're invited to have a coffee on board and watch the sunset with him, who sfter showed us the boat (which is a kind of museum boat), the crew and also showed us an animation of the naval battles…
We visited this site as part of our tour so had the benefit of a tour guide. It's a great site to walk around as there is a raised boardwalk around most of it. To see how they constructed the village and the ever extending walls was amazing.
Go well prepared & as early as you can on a weekday. It can be quite enjoyable without the crowds or the heat
We consulted The Rough Guide to Turkey (2010) which said the museum is open in winter months. We could not find updated opening hours on the internet, and when we obtained a map at the Tourist Information Centre near the ferry dock in Çanakkale we were not told that it was not open! Disappointing to walk all the way there…
If you like Bronze age ruins this is the place for you. Unless you are an expert you need a guide to explain the interesting but jumbled ruins.
we visited Troy in a group with a guide. The site was virtually empty so we had the chance to amble slowly about an astonishingly old site.
The Turks say few students of the Gallipoli campaign realise it was actually won on the water, by a little Turkish minelayer named the "Nusret", which laid its mines off to one side of the Bosphorus at a spot used by battleships of the Allies when turning. These mines caught and sunk several British and French battleships, which led the…
