Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Turkey, in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles (or Hellespont) at their narrowest point. The population of the town is 106,116. Çanakkale Province, like Istanbul Province, has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here to the northern (European) side of the strait.
The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The “wooden horse” from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Çanakkale is the second city to be situated on two continents after Istanbul. However Çanakkale is closer to mid-division than Istanbul.
Most of the places in Çanakkale are in walking distance. There is a Tourist Information office several meters from ferryboat station (on the right if you are coming from the ferry). You can pick up a free tourist map of Çanakkale and the surrounding areas. They also have schedules of the minibuses to Troy and ferries to Bozcaada.
Must see places in Çanakkale

- Archaeological Museum
- Korfmann Library
- Naval Museum
Çanakkale,
I wish there had been more on display! But the entrance fee was only 5 TL, which can't be beat. The museum was hard to find- far down Ataturk Caddesi- but the locals were friendly with directions.
If you are a person who is interested in history and have heard about Troy your whole life, a visit to this site will be a little disappointing. You might be able to imagine Troy as a large city that was fought over. The Trojan Horse out front is from the Movie and really does not add to the site….
This was an outdoor museum and the items were, of course, related to military history. I liked the location, and spent a bit of time seated at a bench at the water's edge. The view across to the other side was lovely, especially at sunset.
The best part of thkis museum is the park, whch is full of naval gumns, cannnons, mines and even a submarine hull. Inside is a little poky but well worth looking around, with a good animation of the Dardanelles campaign. And don't forget to visit the Nusret mine layer ship on ylur way out.
Witness the 5000 yrs of Troy history. I was pretty angry and dissatisfied on how the German business excavated the city of troy when first found it. The whole digging for treasure mixed up all the cities. Troy's ancient walls and the different layers of the successive cities built upon the predecessor were still great to explore and enjoyable
There…
The tombs are in spectacular condition.
They accept the "Müze Card", so if you have one entry will be free.
This museum is small, but contains some worthwhile artifacts from the surrounding areas. Admission is only 5TL. The museum is a little out of the way from central Canakkale. However, if you are taking the minibus from Canakkale to Troy then it would be a short walk from the minibus station in Canakkale and you could easily visit before or…
Beware, if you reach Troy with grand expectations along the lines of Pompeii, the Roman forum or the Acropolis, you will be severly disappointed. Although this site still retains very visible foundations from the ancient city, there are no complete buildings and many 'reconstructions'. The site however has a reasonable entrance fee, at 15tl entrance, and one could spend a…
I'm not really "into" war paraphernalia but just the location of this museum makes it worth a visit. I walked around it for the exercise and than sat on a bench overlooking the water and watched the ships as they passed through the narrow straits. There was no cost for the entry the day I was there.
There is not much to see here. There are mainly ruins, which in my opinion are not very well preserved. There is the opportunity to have an audio tour, guided one or simply to read on the panels.
It is impressive the historical value of the place, and there are specific locations (like the main gate) which are still recognizable….
