Asansor is a historical building in Izmir Karataş quarter, within the boundaries of the metropolitan district of Konak. It was built in 1907 as a work of public service by a wealthy Jewish banker and trader of that period, Nesim Levi Bayraklioglu, in order to ease passage from the narrow coastline of Karataş to the hillside, the elevator within the building serving to carry people and goods through the steep cliff between the two parts of the quarter.
In time, the small street that led to the building also came to be known under the same name, Asansor Street. In the 1940s, one of the residents of the street was the singer Dario Moreno, who was to attain fame later.
It was recently restored and since then, became one of the landmarks of Izmir. The street was renamed Dario Moreno Street in memory of the singer.
Currently, top of Asansör is one of the most famous restaurants in Izmir.
I walked from the Swissotel which is close to Konak Pier to Asansor. The best way to see any city is to walk, there is so much to see, don't be afraid! A good tip is to set out from your hotel just after sunrise and arrive early at Asansor. If you are a couple go before sunrise, I was…
This wasn't in any of the guide books, but it was worth a visit. This elevator takes you to the top of the hill which offers a great view of the city.
Happened upon this as trying to shelter from a rain storm.Great views over the city , interesting historical pictures in the acensor itself and chai in the cafe at top good.
One of the best panoramic views of the city. On the top of the elevator you have an amazing view, and also a restaurante (expensive though). the street leading to the elevator, on the down part, is also worth seeing, with nice old houses around and some touristic information.
Nice place to have a drink or a meal in a chic restaurant with a good view of izmir bay. Unfortunately the neighbourhood has not been protected so it's not as nice as at the "asansör". So don't be surprised of the contrast and don't plan to wander around the whole afternoon there. There is no sufficient things to do…
This is a good walk from the Konak Clock so I would get a taxi.
Everyone knows the Asansor as the lift takes you to the Asansor Restaurant. There is a lift so you do not have to climb stairs to get there. Yes its free so the locals do not have to walk the steep hill.
I have been…
Like to see the city view from an upper place with fresh air, its a must visit place in Izmir.
Nice cafe at the top, Dario no street at the bottom; hommage to the very famous jewish singer. The house where he was born and grew up is here.Synagogue a few steps away. The area itself is not very modern. As a matter of fact this is an old part of the city.
This lift tower built more than hundred years back is great deal of job by his owner for the elderly and needy people. Now it offers the beautiful view of the Izmir city. It has a good cafe to sit and enjoy the Turkish tea and snacks. In the evening its really looks amazing to see the beauty of Izmir…
Dario no born and lived here before imigrated and have a famous song which is on play during your tip to upstairs at the historic elevator,No fee is taken as it was planned for the comfort of people climbing upstairs during the 19th century. 2 kms to Konak Square,a cafe and a clean restaurant,a selection of wines are cheap and…
