Asansor is a historical building in Izmir Karataş quarter, within the boundaries of the metropolitan district of Konak. It was built in 1907 as a work of public service by a wealthy Jewish banker and trader of that period, Nesim Levi Bayraklioglu, in order to ease passage from the narrow coastline of Karataş to the hillside, the elevator within the building serving to carry people and goods through the steep cliff between the two parts of the quarter.
In time, the small street that led to the building also came to be known under the same name, Asansor Street. In the 1940s, one of the residents of the street was the singer Dario Moreno, who was to attain fame later.
It was recently restored and since then, became one of the landmarks of Izmir. The street was renamed Dario Moreno Street in memory of the singer.
Currently, top of Asansör is one of the most famous restaurants in Izmir.
The panorama is great from this amazing spot. Staff in the cafeteria can be rude sometimes (you can not have caffe latte for instance for a reason that they only know and they refuse to share it with you…. you can always have a cappuccino though)
It's such a romantic place where you spent pretty time with your lovers. Try it for evening also for dinner
I have been there on my last visit to Izmir. I was so surprised to have never heard of this charming place before.
–Asansor means elevator in English.
This elevator sings famous songs of a well known Turkish composer and lyricist Darío no (who lived at the street on the way to the elevator before he immigrated) while going to…
Asansor is worth seeking out. Fiinding the exact street it's on can be a little tricky. Built in 1907 by a local philanthropist to save people from having to walk the 155 steps that used to connect the two sections of the neighborhood, the lift tower is a sight to behold- a free-standing brick structure in front of a vine-covered…
Excellent for almost everything!
Superb view over Izmir Bay, you can expect also a fantastic sunset and the creme de la creme, enjoy a fabulous dinner taking care about your mate…
The view of Izmir bay is nice but feels incomplete as one cannot see all around, the Asansor building is not a tower standing alone but attached by the back to the slope of the hill, as it was constructed to help old people going up to their houses
And an fantastic view when sunset. Very romantic. And very good food. And they offering vegetarian food as well.
This place is only a short taxi ride from the centre of Izmir. It is unimpressive on arriving at the bottom, but on ascending (which is free) gives a great view over the city and bay. The cafe itself is not exceptional.
The elevator is located on a beautiful, historic street. The view from the top is the best of Izmir that I've seen. There is a lovely cafe at the top to have a drink and watch the sunset as well. Make it part of your Izmir tour!
Despite hating lifts this one is worth a trip in. The views of Izmir are lovely. However don't eat in the cafe at the top it is over priced!
