Etz Ahayim Synagogue, 100% based on 690 ratings
The name Etz Ahayim means “Life Tree“. Ortaköy is considered to be a typical Jewish settlement. After the Bedesten fire in 1618, and with its synagogue, church and mosque in a small triangular area, it became an example of how people of three religions were able to live in harmony and tranquility.
Whenever I travel to another country, I try to find out about the local Jewish community. I became aware as I planned a tour to Istanbul that I needed to arrange a tour ahead of time and found Istanbul Life Jewish Heritage tours on line. I made a relatively last-minute arrangement, not realizing the steps that were needed to take to arrange the tour.
We also booked with this company for a Bosporus cruise and a visit to the monastery and services of the Whirling Dervishes. I highly recommend all of these trips.
We had a great Jewish Heritage tour which was booked in advance. Our guide picked up at our hotel on time and he was knowledgeable and totally flexible about what we wanted to see. We had a great time. This is a must see!!!
This Jewish Heritage Tour in Istanbul was excellent. Our guide, Alp, was knowledgeable and well spoken in English. He knew about each synagogue and was able to provide pertinent jnformation to us, He made the tour a very pleasurable experience.
