Pigeon Valley ( Güvercinlik Vadisi ), just outside Goreme in Cappadocia, is one of Turkey’s most beautiful landscapes. The unique rock formations known as fairy chimneys, or peri bacalar, which are made from wind and water erosion on soft volcanic rock, rise high from the valley floor like chimneys and are dotted in their tops with birdhouses. Some reach at tall as 130 ft Pigeons live in these dovecoats carved into the rocks and cliffs. Years ago the pigeons were used to carry messages from this remote region, and their droppings have long been used by local farmers for fertilizer. Today, however, there are fewer Pigeons in the valley.
Pigeon Valley is a great place for hiking. The whole area around Goreme is made up of valleys with almost no fencing and there are well-marked trails. The mildly hilly trail through Pigeon Valley is free of charge and about 2.8 miles long running between Goreme and Uchisar.
Pigeon is ideal for walking as the trek is relatively easy. Within the valley are man-made caves which make for excellent exploration. Alternatively if walking is not your idea of fun, still head to the top of the valley at sunset where the vibrant orange colors moving down behind the mountains produce wonderful holiday pictures. The valley earned its name from the hundreds of pigeons that have made their homes in the rocks.
Piegon Valley, Cappadocia,
Beautiful landscape.
went for a one hour horse ride in the valley… you'll appreciate the tranquility and peacefulness of this place
This Valley has a view of Uchhisar castle and there are people araound sells turkish viagra 🙂
The climb to Uchisar is beautiful. When you reach Uchisar, keep going up and you'll reach Uchisar fortress, which has great views to lofty snow-covered Mt. Erciyes on clear days.
We did the Pigeon Valley Trek after enquiring with our hotel's reception. As we are staying in Uchisar, we did the trek on our own without any hiccups. We walked down from hotel and hit the trail when we saw the signage of Pigeon Valley.
our guide said us that thousands of piegon lived there in the old. I can not imegine that now because nowdays I was able to see only a few piegons.
Walked from Uchisar to Gerome. Somehow lost the sign for the valley. Locals were friendly but of not much help for directions due to language barrier. Even got invited inside for tea… Anyway, a bit lost found a track heading to the valley through the old village.
We enjoyed a walk in the pigeon valley with our guide and owner of Goreme Suites very much. He grew up and lives in the area and had intimate knowledge of the history, people and flora and fauna of the valley. He gave us us an insider's view of the area that was very informative and enjoyable.
We took a hike through the valley. It was through a tour company and it was very nice. The view were great, the trail was managable. There were enough trees along the way to provide shade. Got some very nice pictures and a day to remember.
I went to Pigeon Valley for a morning walk apparently at a perfect time of the year. Takes about 2-3 hours and it was exquisite. Quiet walk with lavender and golden blooms accompanying your walk with just the right amount of hills up and down. Extraordinary formations.
