The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Definitely get a tour guide and read up prior to visiting to fully enjoy this place..
Simon says "it's worth a quick hike around and a look at." Kids got a chuckle and enjoyed running around.
There are many pigeon and pigeon houses in this vally. It was really nice to hike in this valley. Hiking from uchısar to goreme ıs the best hiking
Well worth the climb which wasn't that hard. Our kids 5 and 8 and their grandmother 77 had no problem climbing to the top, I'm glad we went here and Uchisar is a charming little place. You could buy a cup of coffee (and other things to drink) at the top.
A very interesting castle with great views of the surrounding area at the top. Quite safe to walk to the top, first part of the ascent is inside the castle, the last part is on the outside using steps and path. There are some areas around the edge of the castle cordoned off for safety but in general its fine to walk…
Amazing, astounding, breath taking that is the best to describe it.
You have to wear comfortable walking shoes, as you have to do some moderate climbing as well. But , it is worth it!!!
Cavusin giving the residents a perspective that most village Turks do not possess. Only a few family trees are needed to give every resident a leaf, the true mark of a village, and yet almost every family has numerous relatives living in Holland and Germany, another quintessential mark of Anatolian villages.
This is a very nice walking/hiking area that is a fun walk. The rocky area is something that you won't see any other place on earth. Truely enjoyable. Be warned though, there might be an old guy selling tea and souvenirs somewhere at the start of the walk. He will take you money as slick as can be. I gave…
It was sobering to learn that Christians lived in the Underground city mostly in the dark with animals present to be protected from the persecutors. There is a nice souvenier shop on site.
Just returned from a wonderful 6 day trip to Turkey. Spent 2 days in Cappadocia and stayed in Cave Hotel…great experience and anxious to go back!
