The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.

I was absolutely fascinated by the Kaymakli Underground City… Image a whole city underground… Simply unbelievable !
Capadocia
Astonishing visit to the carved city!
Overall satisfaction score (0-10). 10.0
This place combines the artistic hand of mother nature and the hard work and adaptability of the human race. This city was carved inside conic or chimnney shaped structures by the christians around the year 1,000 to live and hide from the roman persecution….
Amazing, kind and friendly staff. Really cool hotel- never been a cave hotel before! A unique experience. Fast wireless. Beautiful view. In the city center, close to great restaurants and reasonably priced and local products shopping.
The drive down to Belisirma in the heart of Ihlara Valley was picturesque and well worth the effort. After parking the car the first thing we encountered was this attractive and inviting restaurant. The shade of the cute little huts, not to mention the opportunity to immerse my feet in the cool clear waters of Melendiz Stream.
This was right down from my hostel (nirvana cave)….about 1km. very convenient to walk to. Beautiful the day I arrived as balloons were overhead at 3pm. Museum closes at 5pm. Give yourself about an hour to just go through it pretty quickly, but if you are into looking at each fresco and hearing the history of each church there, then…
Interesting cave structures that were and still are used as dwellings. Clean and well maintained, a must see if you are any where near the area.
April is a great month for exploring this open air museum. It can become something of a furnace in the summer. The downside is that there are some who see this as the high season. the crowds can be large in the afternoon. Make sure that you see the Buckle church. Then go home and research the story of St….
This was an interesting site but an overview at the beginning would have been helpful. We walked from the town of Goreme arriving fairly hot and bothered and had absolutely no idea of the size of this attraction or whether to go up or down to start once inside. A few site plans or maps indicating, "You are here" and…
it's unbelievable place, make such place in those time where fits 20 000 person with their horses?
Some baren rock, not many signs of life left, barely any wall paintings… A big disappointment -no need to go.
