The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Expensive entry fee for what you actually see but I suppose it's ok if it is going for the preservation and upkeep. Did not like much of the preservation work though – very "cementy" and "concreety"
Beatiful place, lots of formations to admire and paths to explore. beaware you have to be very careful in some areas as there are no handrails. This site is usually included in tours leaving Goreme but you'd better do it by your own.
if you are into historical places then this Open Air museum is the place for you. not like any other museum, like the name indicates it is open air. lots of caves with rooms inside where catholic religion study were held. dont forget to bring water!
I was proud of my past. , we come to see that they.in the rock houses, kitchen, warehouse, winery, water well, Kayakapı, tunnels, everything was original.
there is a lot to see here and you have the chance to walk by yourself. the signs show you the way perfectly and you take you photos 🙂
We did not listen to other tripadvisor posts that told you not to go early morning because of crowds. We went early morning and the crowds were terrible. It is a wonderful place to visit but there were so many large tour groups at the time we were there that we did not get to enjoy it the way you…
This is definitely one of the most interesting and beautiful places to visit in Turkey. If you're coming to Turkey, you should try to stop in Cappadocia, and Goreme is a great place to take it in!
An impressive outdoor "museum" of caves that were built into homes, chapels, and other facilities by Ottoman and Hittite residents. Overrun with tourists in the summer. Try to arrive early in the day or during colder seasons.
Visit small pottery suvenior shops and do pottery to have a great time.
