The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Make sure you do this on camel-back to make it an extra-unforgettable experience. Takes you away from the tourists and into a little bit of "amazingness".
The Göreme open-air museum resembles a real life, resemblance of Star Wars planet Tatooine that is approximately 1.5 km's from Göreme's centre. The physical manifestation is enriched by the well preserved monastic complex imbued with deep piety allowing visitors to dwell on the evolution of religious artwork evident in the frescoes.
History and religion aside, the UNESCO site is interesting…
went for a one hour horse ride in the valley… you'll appreciate the tranquility and peacefulness of this place
If you go off season there are less crowds. we took a private tour and did not feel herded around . If your in a large group and only get 3 minutes in each small church its more crowded and harder to see.
Liked the approach and the views from above the valley, but a bit touristy. Would have liked longer to explore a bit further and get away from the buzz , to experience the peace and tranquility .
Go with a tourist guide and nice shoes. If in summer time bring wather with you than buying on site. Even on april visit the museum up and donw it's quite na experiance.
I liked all during stay there. Owners were friendly, helpful and efficient at all times. The location was very central to the town. Breakfast were plentiful and satisfying, with tea and coffee always available.
Interesting place which is a must see in Goreme . But for us it wasn't impressive as we visited the Ihlara valley the day before . Ihlara valley also had lot of churches and strange rock formations which makes Goreme park poor in comparison .
Belisirma is in the Ihlara Valley, Goreme in Cappadocia. It is the restaurant all tourists are brought to after a 3 kilometre hike. Needless to say, the hikers are hungry, but even this cannot mask the atrocious fare that is offered as food. Tasteless soup (what is in it?) burnt meatballs, leathery stew, and three thin small slices of watermelon…
It appeared to be much less known than the Goreme open air museum, but it is also an UNESCO site and very much worth seeing!
What most interested me in this museum was the fact that there is one Catholic Church very close…
