The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Not for those who are claustrophobic, but for everyone else, don't miss this! My tour guide encouraged me to do this, even though I was flagging from a morning hike, and I am so glad I went in. It is true history. You feel a connection to those who created this city, and have to marvel at what it took…
Eight stories below the ground is just incredible that this was carved out of rock like it was. The pictures didn't come out well and don't represent it like I saw it. Maybe a wide angle?
Great place for people who are up for lot of hiking, climbing and exploring during your holiday. Not recommended for people who want relaxing holidays. Make sure you pack your hiking boots and rugsack. Great place to have adventures and explore undiscovered places within the rocks, hills and caves.
especially in the afternoon great colours, take you time to enjoy the walk. We started in Göreme just off the Müze road. There are red signs on the rocks:to red rose valley, so you cannot get lost. On the way to rose valley you will pass a tea stand, the guy there show you the best direction to go: Follow…
Its a UNESCO World Heritage Sight and worth to visit.Claustrophobic persons may have unpleasant experience.Obese people and very tall people have problems as tunnels are quite narrow n long to travel.
Nice views but I liked the opn air museum and the national park a lot better
strolling this huge area, visiting the different churches, admiring
the fantastic frescos – its a lifetime experience
This area has an entry fee but if you are into seeing the Churches of the area it is worth the admission. The Fresco paintings are in reasonable condition and again a guided tour is the best method of getting the most out of these sites.
This open air museum is easily accessible and a must see in Cappadocia. I loved the representation of religious symbols in the different rock cut churches. That some of the outdoor frescoes still exist is remarkable. There is a reason the location is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
After walking down the 400 plus steps to the valley floor you can proceed on either side of the small river. There were some tour groups lined up but with a valley length of 14 kilometres they soon seemed to spread out and it was quiet and peaceful.
