The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Maybe it is because we visited in summer and maybe it is because we have seen better valleys or maybe because we visited it as part of a tour group and did not get the chance to scramble up to the numerous cave churches that dot the valley we did not consider it that spectacular. Don't get us wrong- it…
While not quiet of the quality of the Goreme Open Air museum, at Zelve you can avoid the crushing hordes of Goreme.
This was a unique and fun experience. But would have been nice to have some more signs and interactive displays. Once you've seen some of the buildings, the rest aren't that different.
Goreme is a fascinating place and is a must see when in Turkey. We were there late November and it was cool weather but not too busy as not the peak of the tourist season. I have travelled to many countries but the landscape here is something very different
Cave Dwellings in Cappadocia perhaps one of the key highlights of Turkey.
There was nothing much at the valley but the nice photo shooting spot with panorama view. Some souvenir shops, some ice cream shop, but trust me for souvenir, let's go buy it at Spice Market Istanbul, you will find more than 50% off the price..
Yes, this valley is beautiful and should not be missed but many reviews are failing to tell you how challenging this can be if you're not 'the outdoors type". First, make sure your shoes have great tread and grip. I was wearing my beloved Keens walkers but these were not great for the almost granite like surfaces in this valley….
beautiful hike through here and well worth doing if you have the time. It's smaller than the other valleys so you can visit this valley if you only have an hour or two.
It"s really a wonder how these structures were made. There a a number of stone formations and sites worth visiting when you visit Cappadocia.
Must visit.
Wear proper shoes! Lots of gravel to slip on! Otherwise Highly reccomend renting an ATV, it's soo much more fun, cooler and accessible!
