The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Amazing rock cut churches and caves in a picturesque setting…its worth investing in a guide who can explain the churches you are seeing in the caves and the frescoes within. Make sure to go to the church at the top of the hill (to the left of the park entrance) as it is in the best condition and has gorgeous…
The Zelve museum is great for a moderately short visit, as you can just follow along the path and read the posted signs (or listen to your tour guide) as you look at absolutely amazing networks of cave houses in the surrounding landscape. Also, the extremely early mosque is very cool to see as well.
Very nice landscape ,old history ,but a little crowded. 10 TRY entrance fee.I vivited there about sun set and there was so nice.
don't miss it.
Mounts of the hills with small opening sporadically peaking through these rocks, makes it a Grimm’s Fairy tale or the next perfect scene for Star Wars. The majority of the frescoes inside the caves are hardly visible, the coloring has faded, now you can’t really tell weather is it a painting, or an aged wall. Nevertheless, what a wonderful experience,…
On my bus trip through Turkey two days were scheduled for Cappadocia sightseeing. What an experience and what a wonderful unexpected fairy tale land -By day we visited the underground dwellings, caves, churches in the rocks and took very early morning balloon rides. A visit to a typical Turkish cave house was included- I could have just stayed there. Stopping…
Unfortunately nature and erosion takes it's toll and many structures are falling apart. It is like Ihlara vadisi you can walk around but can not get close to many of the structures due to risk of collapsing . Still it is nice to walk in the open air museum and try to imagine the valley that has been densely populated…
An interesting experience but not always an easy place to visit especially if you do not enjoy confined spaces (claustrophobia). Some connecting tunnels are low and difficult to traverse especially if there is a crowd and people are trying to escape from a low-roofed tunnel. Interesting experience but would never do it again.
This is an amazing place to visit, with lots of history. Do this up close at ground level, plus view it from a hot air balloon – fantastic !!
if you have limited time mght be OK otherwise you will see beter elsewheref for less money
Must go. Amazing and very interesting.
