The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
The natural beauty of the Open-Air Museum is somewhat damped by the large number of tourists that visit every day.
Make sure you have enough water and and snacks for the day-trips in this area.
Would love to see this again after it has snowed…
Not enough to see vs. the amount of people that they let in daily. Not worth the trip in my eyes but if you do go, go with a group so that you have a guide to show you around.
cost to enter makes this not very worthwhile since Red Valley and Rose Valley have better sites and are free, only benefits are the many descriptive plaques explaining the history of the rooms
Off season is the best time to visit this place. There were still many tour group tourists even in November. This place is full of history and evidence of early Christian settlements living in a cave and fascinating experience.
Talk about different- exploring this cave city feels like going through a Disneyland attraction. It's hard to believe people (and animals, including horses) lived here. Best part is the many giant round 'doors' used to block off enemies– it looks straight out of Indiana Jones. Suggest you go earlyish to avoid being stuck 6 floors down in the earth with…
Close to Love valley we drove to it on our ATVs and enjoyed the beautiful sunset seeing the different shades of red on it.
Great area for photography Tourist prices generally dearer than rest of non tourist Turkey. A world heritage site, with plenty of space to get away from the many visitors to this area.
The Ihlara valley is a must for walkers walking the 12-14 kilometres from near the village of Ihlara. Worth paying a few Turkish Lira to do this. An…
Great to see but be very careful with your timings. Definately avoid mid morning to mid afternoon .The tour busses seem to choose this time of day. Try either earlier or later plus the light is great at that time for the photographs.
There is 6 km hiking trail in the Pigeon valley, that connects Goreme and Uchisar. Easy stroll and beatiful surroundings. Not for serious hikers but very nice..
a very good walking, interesting cave formations, churches and I enjoyed using the headphone set to listen briefly about each fresco's , churches history. Park tour can be completed in an hour.
