The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Amazing cave, very historic. A bit chill inside so wear a cardigan or light jacket. Not suggested for those who have walking dissabilities.
I'm not a religious person, but I felt that it was worth braving the crowds to see these unique examples of early Christian chapels built inside caves. Most of the lines took only 10-15 mintues until it was our turn to go inside. There is little shade, so bring along a hat, or even an umbrella, to fend off the…
early christians escaped persecution by hiding in these caves that were created 10 million years ago when volcanoes erupted and created capped stalagmites that eventually eroded into the cavernous dwellings. super gnarly and awesome.
amazing places to visit
It is hard to imagine how people lived and worshiped here over 1000 years ago. You don't need a tour to visit…highly recommend you go on your own and take time to absorb symbols in frescoes. Don't overlook the church outside entrance that your ticket covers.
Since the unfortunate death of a tourist who fell whilst taking a photo, this is just a photo opportunity between the cameras of lots of other tourists
This place was insanely crowded with numbers of tour groups (it was the end of may and around 10am) we wasted a lot of time waiting in line. We eventually gave up seeing Apple church because the line was like, 100m. After all, we found that only thing it was worth seeing was the dark church's fresco painting. (extra 8TL)…
Goreme has a very unique rock formations. Fairy chimneys, caves, animal-like rock formations. It's not found in any other countries, i guess. The rock formations can resemble many things (dolphins, gorilla, duck, and even The Most Blessed Virgin Mary). There is even at one location, the Fairy chimney family, which locals call it consist of the Grandpa, the Grandma.
The way is marked at the beginning and at the end. If you are starting from the Uchisar side then turn when you see a bunch of wooden dove coats. This is an easy walk.
