The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
You can walk from Goreme about 25 minutes or take transport. If you are doing a tour to the underground city and other cave churches you could skip this, but if you have the time it's worth seeing. We paid the extra 8 lira to go into the dark church, worthwhile but not exceptional.
…just be prepared for some scrambling up/down some steep inclines. best place to star is near the GOA museum.
rose valley,pıdgon valley, zemı and love valley. BALOONS SHOW IN THE MORNING!!!! (you should wake up at 5,the vıem from pıdgon valley is good)
Liked everything about it. Our guide was very knowledgeable!
If you are new to goreme, this should be your first stop. You can get up close at the cave dwellings, walk inside and see the frescos and churches that are still in good condition. A little packed with tourists…so arrive really early or later in the afternoon.
Fantastic! This place truly deserve to be a UNESCO Heritage Site. One could only imagine how this wonderful place was conceive. Thousands of caves dotted the mountains, like a city somewhere in space. Even the Star Wars movie use this location.
The Christians fleeing from persecution, settled in Cappadocia after Jesus Christ was crucified. Hiding from the Roman soldiers, they…
I love these natural rock formation, and man carved caves throughout the century. I wondered through the tunnels and caves for hours, and sensing how the ancients lived in these natural home.
We went to the open air museum and thought it probably wasn't worth the money. It is interesting if you like looking around churches, but we found it much more fun exploring the caves nearby for free which feel much more authentic and non-touristy. Just cross over the road and go down the hill a little and there are amazing…
What Zelve Open Air Museum lacks in pizazz Goreme more than makes up for it. There are the typical Cappadocia cave homes to poke your head into but what you really come to Goreme for are the cave churches.
The churches are simple carved edifices without any fancy stonework but it is the frescoes that make them special places. Some…
This was the worst meal i've had after a week of traveling around turkey, which includes many meals of street food. It is unfortunately the restaurant tour companies choose to use as their inclusive lunch.
