The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Our guide took us here during our north Cappadocia tour. We didn't explore the area by foot. We were just taken there for picture opportunities. The view was spectacular. We could see the Rose Valley in the distance. The only other place we were able to see the Rose Valley was on our hot air balloon flight.
The national park covers a large area, and unless you have plenty of time to discover the place by yourself it is worth finding a guided tour to find out more information about the area.
If you like hiking and wandering around, any of the valley hikes in Cappadocia will provide a great experience. I would definitely recommend spending 1/2 a day hiking the different valleys to get a more "off the beaten path" Cappadocia experience (instead of just cooped up in different artisan factory/workshops and group tours of the underground cities). But definitely put…
there are many holes on the stone accualy people was using these for the paint and for garden but i dont know why they use for paint??? but they are nice that is good thing people cares animals in the history..
Interesting place of ancient homes and churches all built in caves. You can also see some very old frescos and paintings in the churches. These were places for the Hittites and early christians. Well worth a visit.
It was a neat place but after exploring caves and not seeing anyone, it was overwhelming to wait in line to see the church caves and paintings. What was really disappointing was that you needed to pay extra to see the "best" paintings and you were not allowed to take photos anywhere indoors, even with the flash off. Very disappointing.
Amazing place, where you visit rooms and churches carved into caves from before 1200AD. It is a bit of the same thing repeated as you exit one cave church and into the other, but the amazing history of the place does leave you mesmerised.
This open air museum is within approximately 1 km walking distance from Goreme town. You need to pay entrance fee to get in the open air museum. A lot of ancient caves. Fun
The entire Kapadokya (Cappadocia) region is exquisite, a grand combination of eerie, lunar landscapes mixed with fascinating culture ranging from the ancient Hitties and their pottery to the 1,000 year-old Christian churches
Agreed with all the reviews, go with a tour or alone very interesting history and sights! Great for pictures but does get a bit more same-old after two days.
