The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
It is one of those points that provides a break or resting stop. Nothing really impressive. You do get the grandeur view from across the valley (where we were staying at Argos).
Although it snowed during our visit this is a museum not to be missed. Lots of walking and steps so may not be the best place if you are in any way disabled. Recommend talking the audio tour if visiting without a guide otherwise you really don't understand the significance of it all
You should see this magnificance place and the three graces. Really It is wonder of nature. A beautiful area for hiking. 'll Think yourself on another planet.
I made the decision to walk from Goreme to Uchisar because it wasn't too far, and I got carsick. We wanted to go through the valley on our first leg to Uchisar, however we went the wrong way and didn't go through the Valley. When we were at top looking down, we saw the valley and vowed not to miss…
The Goreme Open Air Museum is the best one stop shop for seeing the Cappadocia sights. It has a vast complex of churches and dwellings as well as views that makes it the place to go if you don't have much time and the first place to see even if you do.
It was hot, sunny, and a first. A history to be only experienced in Turkey. One has to stand and ltouch the structures and be amazed and civilization lived like this.
Very unique experience that you can't get anywhere else.
A must to when in the area, although it was frustrating at times waiting for the larger tour groups. If only they spoke English I would have learnt so much more!
It was disappointing that quite a few areas were closed and had been for some time or so it seemed.
Ortahisar area is quite rich in examples of the earlier monastery life and the Ortahisar castle where used to be a dwelling area is now an interesting view point that could easily be climbed. The village is an active centre of culture and trade. The lemon produced in south coast of Turkey is kept in a natural atmosphere in underground storages carved into rocks.
The various churches and living quarters carved into the stone hills are a marvel to explore!!
