The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Surrounded by fairy chimneys, the valley is unique. It is an easy 2.5 mile hike. One does not have to hike the entire trail. The first mile will amaze hikers enough. There are lots of opportunities to enter and explore the caves. Camera, water and running shoes are highly recommended.
There are numerouse entrances into the valley. Our entrance was…
It's about 1.5 walking in the valley and the trip ends up at the highest point of town, the castle, really nice view. It was a little bit tricky in the valley, since the direction sign wasn't very clear and even some pointed to a wrong direction. But over all it wasn't very difficult to reach your destination.
Lots of pondering about the landscape and architecture make me humble of our past. Historical sites and biblicial figures paitning are an absolute treat to the eyes of artists.
It was a bit dark by then. It was very similar to the Rose and Red valley and if you have seen these or the open air museum then you can easily miss this without missing much.
Avanos is a lovely town which is very easy to reach, from Nevşehir,Göreme,uçhisar, and Urgup. Nevşehir is the head of all the touristic towns like goreme urgup, uchisar, avanos, gulsehir, kaymakli, derinkuyu, because admisnistration system is totally different in Turkey.so, Avanos,is a town in discricts of Nevşehir, known as Cappadocia. İt is nearby ancient halys,or todays kizilirmak river, and is a quiet, slow city which has local architecture elements. so people…
We liked so much, nice views, the place itself is magic, the caves and so were so nice to visit, we were in February and the weather was a little bit cold and windy, but the experience was so good, we liked the paints in the church, and the houses were the people used to lived and how they lived.
We visited both Derinkuyu and Kaymakli. Though both are amazing places, Kaymakli is the best. Read our other review to find out why. Derinkuyu is probably easier to go to (or to go in). It's hard to believe that so many people lived there. Worth visiting, both places.
Incredible, historical and beautiful all around. All the valleys are magnificent and the people so friendly. We are a family and have loved it all. The villages, the walks and the views.
You must stop at this museum. There are churches within the unassuming caves that must be seen to be believed. Nothing else in the world like it. Completely worth it!
I love Turkey… I had the best time ever… I am planning to go there again every year… Food is fantastic people are friendly..
