The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.

It is a very strange place, with lots of churches carved into the faces of cliffs. Inside, the walls are painted with ochre and pigments. It's a weird cross between caveman painting and christian art. Spend the extra lira to see the dark church as well, it's the most beautiful of the churches.
Excellent but be ready to walk narrow and low space, you would never think the people could do that to protect themself
Pigeons were important to the people here a long time ago, not for eating purposes but for their droppings. So they were very well looked after. The valley contains many pigeon nesting caves, views are sensational
Be aware that you will be in small spaces and if you are at all claustrophobic, you might want to pass.
The people are so friendly here, so sweet. I told my husband that my mouth was dry and a local offered me some cherries. The place is a must see if you are near Goreme. There are some of the best preserved cave dwellings and early Christian frescoes. You can't take pix in some of the monasteries because they want…
If starting from Uchisar, make sure you start at a marked trail head. The path on one branch valley below Uchisar ends suddenly at a beautiful sheer cliff with no warning. I saw several confused hikers get way too far out on the crumbling cliff edge in their desire to find a way through.
This is one of the many small valleys close to Goreme with unbelievable rock formations and man-made caves, windows and pigeon houses. You wont stop shooting pictures! Only a few minutes away from the village
After our wanderings through Swords and Rose Valleys on our second day in the Goreme area, we arrived in Cavusin village. It was a lovely quiet village and had some amazing sites to visit. The old village, now abandoned, was all carved into the hillside. Im not really sure how old the settlement is, but it’s definitely been around for a long, long time.
