The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Wasn't a highlight of our stay in Goreme. Overcrowded and overrated. Perhaps because we had visited the underground city beforehand we were left a little underwhelmed by what the museum had to offer.
The reason we went to Turkey, to see Capadoccia, the landscape, the cave dwellings, the churches carved out of this caves and their history, truly amazing. See all of this from the air in a balloon ride. The early morning balloon ride was pricey $200.ea person but is well worth it. The view from the air and the ride above…
Though a bit strenuous for someone with walking difficulties, this tour was well worth the effort. The tour brought home what life in the caves must have been like. I gained a new appreciation for what early settlers must have gone through to survive.
It is open until 7 pm and it is best to wait until after 5 pm to visit. It will be cooler, better colors with the sun angle, and most importantly fewer people. There is an additional 8TL charge to see the the Dark Church. It is easily worth the extra cost, don't skip it.
it is a place that you need to see, nice shops and view best fairy chimmneys ever. you can take great photos and enjoy the view.
This Unesco world heritage site left me in amazement. You are able to closely experience this cave dwelling settlement and monestary while learning a huge amount of history. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience if you are ever I that part of the world. Be ready to climb and crouch if you want to go through all…
The open air museum is a great place to visit for a few hours while in Goreme. There's interesting rock formations, beautiful scenery and many historical sites (religious sites). You can choose to explore on your own (which is quite fun as the whole place is a bit maze like) or follow a guide.
Nothing much to admire..more beautiful places than this,Its just a photo stop. There are more beautiful places of such type in capadocia where you can go in admire the place..
We did the Pigeon Valley Trek after enquiring with our hotel's reception. As we are staying in Uchisar, we did the trek on our own without any hiccups. We walked down from hotel and hit the trail when we saw the signage of Pigeon Valley.
What a way to spend a few hours hiking 7 km. Non-stop views of one beautiful thing after another. Ended the day at a riverside restaurant for some fresh fish and Apple tea. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
