The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Cappadocia is wonderful for hiking and you can't go wrong in Pigeon Valley. It is simply beautiful. We visited in July which was a little too hot for this hiker. The sun is blazing!
amazed at the intellect of people living in that era
I liked it very much… A place to be visited those who visits cappodocia… Especially the churchs and chapels are worth seing…
It took us a very short time to see this place. There were several caves but it wasn't anything different from what we'd already seen elsewhere. It took us only 30 minutes to see everything and it was packed packed packed with people. It seemed like some sections that were normally open were cordoned off.
definitely a must visit. Well preserved…. a more detailed description at each site would have helped get a better understanding though
I went here a few years ago and ı loved it. you need to visit this place. Actually all the kappadocia need to be visited.. is an amasing place that ı thought i was in the Herry Poter Film :)…
you need to see teh castle and the valley too and of course the underground cityes too.
you can visit…
Be sure to go early and pay extra to see the dark church. There is also a spectacular church that is free and is outside the museum gate.
Wonderful trails for hiking between Uchisar and Goreme! From the hike, the different layers of valley from different volcanic eruption can be observed.
You can do a short 3.5km, medium 7km, or long 14km hike through Ihlara Valley depending on where you start. It is a must do if you have more than one day in Cappadocia.
There were a lot of tour groups visiting the Open-Air museum and most of the people I overheard were disappointed as there was little to see other than empty caves. It is a long walk from the village in the heat and this is at the bottom of the list in an amazing place with very exciting places to visit.
