The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Really was amazing to see this area. Whilst crowded with some touristy shops no one hounded you which was very nice.
Yes, this place is full of tourists and because some of the chapels are very small your tour guide is only allowed a few minutes to explain everything to you. It is a beautiful place and worth the wait even if you'd like to spend longer in each "room". The paintings in the chapels are lovely.
A very nice place, you have to take the balloon and fly over the mountains. It was an amazing experience. The Musseum Hotel is great, the rooms into the stones are wonderful.
We arrived early and did not want to mix with the hoards pouring out of coaches.
We left ther car in the car park and walked across the road and had a lovely 2 hr walk in Rose valley. Plenty of rock churches there to explore…alone!
Apparently this was the location of a monastery and a nunnery (at least that is what they seem to think) there are several caves with Frescos in them depicting religious scenary. Your guide can't go in with you because they think that talking in the caves is damaging the Fresco's but they should explain what you are going to see…
When visiting the caves, apart from very early or late, it is difficult to avoid the tour buses. Fortunately they seem to rush through and if you wait patiently they soon pass and it is peaceful again.
Only part of the caves to 50 or so metres are open. Those farther down another 40 metres are considered unsafe.
Be prepared to walk! You are going to visit a park where people from the 8th century build houses and churches on caves, to protect against enemies. You can visit many of them where you will find some very interesting paintings on the walls, with christian images and s very interesting to understand how these people lived so long ago.
This area is really special and interesting, fun for all tyes of pleasures.
Göreme is one part of Cappadocia where is fameus with natural volcanic hills and inside, lots of old churches (7-11th siecle) with freskos and some tombs now.
You can be near to this historical and beatifull geographic area.
I can say, Kapadokya's different parts is similar to…
Interesting experience and worth the time. The usual 3TL parking. Just a few kilometers up the road the busier Derinkuyu underground city and not quite as extensive, but the same experience. Not for the claustrophobic. It involves hunkered-over walking through tight spaces.
