The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
a must see place if you go to Cappadocia. We felt it was ok to do it alone, no travel guide needed for this one, unless you are deeply interested in religious aspects of the paitings. 1h seems enough to do the visit. The paid chapel, maybe be worth the visit because it the only one in Cappadocia with well…
All of Goreme is amazing.
We were there before high season & there were lots of buses but it didn't seem too crowded. I suspect in high summer season it would be different.
Take a sun hat, plenty of water & wear flat shoes & I'd recommend reading a bit about it before you go.
We came here twice on our trekking tour, the second time to eat pancakes. Like everything we saw in Cappadocia4, we highly recommend it.
i've never seen this kind of Museum in my entire life. its rocky yet spectacular.
make sure you wearing sneakers+socks , easily-absorb shirt, sunglasses or hat.
bring liters of water as well, coz you gonna the path is hilly.
Just a short climb away, you will get amazing views. You can leave the car just by the entrance, not having to climb all the village… There´s an entrance fee. Not much to see there, but great view.
Beautiful landscape.
I enjoyed visiting the Open Air Museum, but the highlight and main reason to go was the Dark Church. It does have an additional entry fee, but I felt it was worth it. We had a guide who told us the history and that added.
Mmm…this is a tough one. The churches (caves) were fascinating. Unfortunately there were hardly any information available on anything inside the site. We were very excited to learn more about the people that built and used these churches so we got the audio guides. They were useless. It was just some guy telling you things like "on your right you…
I could not believe in that people lived in that city for months in the old. they had tought everything without any technology but perfect. and I Recommend everyone.
This is an amazing site. The effort that has must have been required and the size and depth of this underground city is remarkable.
We visited as a part of a tour and the place was mobbed as they all seemed to be there at the same time. We had to wait for other tours to move along to see…
