The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
tour guide not necessary, there are arrows in there and fun to explore! not for those with claustrophobia
This is incredible from historical point of view. How it was designed and built thousands years ago, with water supplies lying underneath and vents to provide air, with all the storage and living spaces. We never felt claustrophobic or that there was not enough air. We visited two underground cities.
Kaymakli and Derinkuyu Underground cities, each one is worth seeing..
It would be nice for anyone who could walk or bike ride ( mountain bike) the valley, many places where you could take pictures
eyes werent enough to catch the beauty,it seems you need to intermediate camera between you and this unique experience.
We started our sightseeing at the outdoor museum, and it provided a great foundation for us form which to plan the rest of our trip in the area. Try to avoid morning hours when all of the tour buses are there. Additionally, if you are planning to take any of the organized tours, make sure they do NOT include the…
This is a good alternate to Goreme if the crowds there are too large. It does not have the intense frescoes that Goreme has, but has its own charm.
I couldn't believe that this cave can enter 5,000 people. but I have look around there, I thought capacity was enough to enter 5,000 people. I think, this cave was well-made in view of engineering, because of water supply, air supply, trap, etc. Because of narrow path, sometimes it was difficult to pass in the cave.
The view from the top is great, but that's not the most amazing thing about Uchisar castle. Talk to the old man who sells juice at the top of the castle; not only can he regale you with tales of the castle, he can lead you on an amazing adventure exploring the tunnels below the castle.
I did all the tours in the area and this was one of my favorite stops – you can not miss this if you are in Cappadocia. This is like no place on earth and the history that goes with this area is fascinating.
This site is fantastic, but it is so crowded with tour groups, I wish we had gone to a less visited site. Cappadocia is HUGE, and has more to offer, and really good sites too, than you can possibly see in a short stay. Spending your time here cueing to try and step into a tiny church, hopefully between tour…
