The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Wasn't expecting much from this place. We did a a hike in a nearby valley and stopped here on our way back. The location has beautiful views. The place was not very busy as we came late in the day. It has a almost magical quality to it, hard to describe but all in the party felt the same way….
Very touristy, but this is for a reason – its stunning!!
I found the landscape of Cappodocia to be amazing and so worthwhile to see; to experience well take a hot air balloon ride!
Don't miss walking and Horse riding. Be careful , Some car drivers drive very fast. Don't forget to bring enough water during hot seasons.
To my surprıse Pıdgeon Valley was very pretty. Seeıng pıgeons away from the Cıty settıng was really a treat. We had coffee and cay and a small outdoor cafe there and spent almost an hour just observıng the pıgeons flyıng ın a valley where there are caves and evıdence that sometıme ago people dwelled there.
Stop by hold some pigeons in hand there's a guy on the side near a pigeon house…take pigeons in hand click pics with the pigeon valley in the background.
Ihlara Vadisi , a hidden gem in Cappadocia area, is a very attracive canyon to walk through.
The walking trail under trees, by Melendiz stream is all surrounded by cave dwellings (lots of churches, chapels and houses connected by tunnels ) many of which are off limits due to risk of collapsing.
I can't say much about the landscape of Cappadocia that hasn't already been said, but I need to put in my vote of confidence for the Rose Valley, which really is as worthwhile as indicated here. If you get a chance to come to Cappadocia, do make a point of hiking this or one of the other trails. It is…
The Goreme Open Air Museum is more like a park with several cave dwellings and churches to visit and unusual rock formations to walk among. To call it a museum makes it sound like a bunch of exhibits, but instead it is very interactive. There are still frescoes on some of the church walls illustrating a variety of skill levels…
What a lovely church. Just to be able to stand in a place so old as this was just amazing. frescos were amazing to see. And for free!!!
