The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
I loved the view, the shops and the elderley lady who crocheted doilies and craft was wonderful. Buy one, her craft is detailed and lovely. The pigeon's do need a feed and there is a place to donate $'s. They are a part of every location on this planet, bless them.
We recommend to visit Pigeon Valley.
We visited during jeep safari. Was very interesting, unique place.
Very nice walk , about 1 hour if you take your time or if you are watching at the turtles on the way. Not difficult at all but there are not a lot of indications on the way and at the beginning. You can go one way by the pigeon valley and the other way by the love valley. Easier…
very busy all year round… you literally have to jump in and out of every church… definitely get a guide and do read on your own prior to visiting the place otherwise you'll get bored.
Goreme Open Air musem is only a few minutes outside of Goreme. 15 TL entrance fee.
We choose to visit without a guide or audio headset which was probably a mistake.
much effort to reach the top of this castle.
better drop yourself at uchisar before sunset.
just like other attraction in Cappadocia and around, use your most comfy sneaker and well-absorb shirt. there is drink seller at the top.
the view on the top is stunning especially when its sunset.
Goreme Esentepe; The panoramic view point of the valleys’ crossroads.
Seems like your going back in time to when the earth was developing. Caves up above from prehistoric times. One could only dream of what lived here way back when.
The Rose / Red Valley walks are moderate -> mildly challenging. It is best early AM, or mid afternoon. Parts of the walk are hot and dusty in summer; but have very few visitors – as most are at beachside resorts during June – July.
If you wanna do it on your own, you need to use compass & map, & always be careful with the cliffs & wrong ways…
