The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
Amazing! So much history. The cave churches are so fascinating and I learned so much. Even my husband, who isn't a history buff like myself, loved it. The nunnery blew my mind.
We originally were reserved to stay at the Double Tree hotel here but changed our minds and stayed at the Aydinli Cave Hotel in Goreme. We are glad we changed hotels but were also glad that our private tour included Avanos. It was interesting to see the craftsmen working at their trade and the jewelry stores we visited.
The view from the top of the castle after you walk up the outside stairs is great. Don't go here if you're expecting to see anything inside as you only get to climb the outside.
Zelve Open Air Museum is an amazing cave city that housed the region's largest communities.
A significant area of interest, from the geological formation to the early spread of Christiani The weather was overcast the whole time. The pictures of the ho-doos were not of great quality.
The Rose Valley is easy to hike , we did this in the evening before sunset. We found a lot of fruit trees along the route.
very nice shops, hotels, restaurants, and historical sites of interest in the park, the largest center trip.
With a central location and a busy (for Cappadocia) town center due to its higher population (17,000) than Göreme or Uçhisar, Ürgüp is a logical base for exploring the surrounding area. In recent years it has become increasingly known for its boutique hotels, many of which are restored cave houses in the Esbelli neighborhood, a 10-minute uphill walk from the center of town. Hotels in this scenic neighborhood often have breathtaking views of the town and the nearby cliffs dotted with man-made caves. Some beautiful old homes formerly owned by Greeks, who were a significant presence in the town until the Greek-Turkish population exchange in 1923, have also been converted into hotels.
Downtown Ürgüp is a fairly tacky jumble of buildings built up mostly for the tourism industry, but it’s a good place to find banks, money exchanges, travel agencies, trinket shops, and even a Turkish bath and a few nightclubs. During the winter months, some of the hotels and restaurants in Ürgüp close, which means fewer options for travelers but a more tranquil atmosphere for those who are around.
Since you've taken all the way to Capadokia, Goreme is definitely the place to go. Ideal for long walks and exploring the exquisite rock formations, caves and sculpted churchs, this geological park wonders visitors from over the world. I went in early Summer and the local temperature was mild and breezy.Take your time and enjoy Goreme Open-Air Museum.
This Open Air Museum had so much to offer. The view of the caves and the landscape all around were just amazing. We rented audio guides, which really helped us get the history of the entire area. I highly recommend the Dark Church (Karanlik Kilise) even if you have to pay extra to get in to this little church cave,…
