The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
To visit Turkey is to visit Cappadocia. The people are gracious and it's a surreal experience to sleep in a cave suite. If ever you wanted to get the full expereince being one with nature….this is it! Just with the modern amenities!!
You also have to go on the hot air ballon ride to fully appreciate this wonderous place from…
We didn't do a balloon but instead opted for climbing Uchisar! We were a little disappointed that there were not many interior rooms to explore, but the view is well worth the climb.
Seeing and going into the cave dwellings in Cappadocia is amazing. To come to understand that for more than two thousand years people have lived in this simple way was of great interest.
you should climb up and enjoy the stunning sunset there, if your hotel is close by you can easily climb up
Entry fee is 5 TL and we decided to visit because we could see the castle from where we were staying in Goreme. There are better examples of rock dwellings elsewhere throughout Cappadocia but the view from the top is quite spectacular. It's easy to envisage how this would have been such an important position centuries ago for no enemy…
So much history! Easy to walk with info in English everywhere. Take your time and explore. If you have kids go early so you can enjoy it and they won't get to tired. ( to bumpy for strollers) great views and caves to explore everywhere.
We had a wonderful sunset tour with rose tour for rosé valley. We started from Goreme town and passed the road then enter the valley, it was a good private tour. Thanks for Mr. Hassan
This is a completely massive city that has been dug out underground. It is a massive complex of tunnels. It has literally thousands of chambers, and it goes down multiple stories. It is such a bizarre experience to walk around inside this cramped city.
Caught the bus from Goreme only takes about twentyfive minutes and costs approx two and half TL.Went to quite a few pottery caves some very lovely items could have spent a fortune.
The Rose Valley is a beautiful walk. There are three churches if you can find them. Further up the trail (past the red valley start) there is a tea room run by on lovely old man. Apparently he is 92 years old and a real cave dweller, living here with no electricity and no hot water. Have tea, buy nuts…
