The Turkish region of Cappadocia, a region of exceptional natural wonders, in particular characterized by fairy chimneys and a unique historical and cultural heritage, boasts one of the most dramatic sights in the world.
Visiting Cappadocia is such a change from visiting many other busy bustling sights all over Turkey. It is a great pleasure to wander in the vast open space filled with captivating natural attractions which have seen human history dated back in the Bronze Age.
While in Goreme Open Air Museum , the conical formations resulting from the volcanic eruptions that took place millions of years ago, just follow the path up to the top of one of the ridges where a spectacular view of the fairy chimneys awaits you. The natural cone formations contain caves and labyrinths. As early as the third century, those chimneys became a hiding place for early Christians who fled persecution from the Romans, and then later from raiding Muslims. In modern tourism, many caves have been turned into cave houses for tourist stays and the lunar-like setting of Goreme Valley has become popular for hot-air ballooning.
Many say the extremely unique landscape of Cappadocia resembles some scene in a Star Wars movie and yet you may be surprised to discover that no major commercial movies have been filmed there. It would be a perfect setting for movies such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter series.
The landscape in the region is spectacular, between the views and the history its not to be missed.
Very short time available in the churches, but a can't miss. You also shouldn't miss the goat's milk ice cream outside the venue. Get two scoops or you'll regret it! 🙂
It is nice, but really, after three churches one wonders how many more can one see. Cave is a cave.. hiking in valleys so much more impressive and interesting
Amazing adventure. Not to be missed. A very worthwhile experience, almost surreal.
This, again, is an amazing place. We took superb pictures, both during the day or at sunset. The landscape is extraordinary. Hard to believe so few people know about that place.
This valley was very interesting w/ all the pigeon holes made to keep the pigeons in the area. Very neat rock formations – nice place to explore, like all the areas we found in Cappadocia!
Beautiful area with many ancient Christian churches w/ frescoes in the excavated fairy chimneys. It's unfortunate that much of the frescoes have worn away or been intentionally destroyed though out the years, but still an amazing place to go. We toured with a guide & he pointed out many interesting facts while in the churches but you could spend a…
Fascinating and a little daunting to clamor around through narrow passages uner the earth. Only visited one of the underground cities and it only went down about 4 stories, but I understand there are more than 20 in the area and some go as deep as 8 stories. Don't miss visiting one of them
There are many shades where we avaid burning sunshine during Tour and price very reasonable. If you go there in peak season, you could have a chance to go there for free from the hotel.
Loved the scenery from every angle. Took lots of fantastic photos!
