The most famous historical feature of Avanos, which is still relevant and very visible today, is its production of earthenware pottery, it is also the most economic activity in the town. The ceramic trade in this district and its countless pottery factories date right back to the Hittites, and the ceramic clay from the red silt of the Kızılırmak has always been used.

View of the city center of Avanos. It is a popular destination because of its attractive old town with cobbled streets, and views over the river.
Visit small pottery suvenior shops and do pottery to have a great time.
We hired push bikes in Goreme and rode to Avanos for lunch. Very interesting place, not as visually appealing as Goreme, but different. The lovely wide river offers numerous places to sit, picnic eating areas, visit a riverside restaurant, mix with the locals, walk or cycle along. The main part of the town is very interesting with numerous cafes, restaurants,…
It’s hard to believe that people used to live there.
I was told that Cappadocia was enjoyable and nice to see… I think the same but in an augmented view. Goreme areais extraordinary, nature is untainted and all the places are good for excursions, especially with a quad bike: amazing!
Words can't describe this astonishing place. You have to see it for yourselves. It's just amazing. You won't believe your eyes. People really did live their lives here.
The prices are higher here than in the Grand Bazaar. Don't waste your time.
We were based here for two nights on our coach tour of Turkey. The town is famous for its pottery made of red clay and the potters' skills and the variety of pottery to purchase is overwhelming.
Large items can be sent direct from the pottery to your home if you do not wish to carry them around with you.
If you are a pottery lover, Avanos is the right place to go. Almost all excursions through Kapadokya make a stop in the small town of Avanos, allowing you to visit one or two of the famous pottery manufacturers studios. Fine vases and many many different articles are shown, exhibiting the grace and genuinity of Turkish art. The more elaborated,…
Wonderful pottery and family run businesses. The prices reflect the fact that each piece is original art.
Great little town about 8 kilometers away from Gerome. Fantastic for pottery and rugs. Would recommend this town to anyone traveling to cappadocia. Enjoy!
