Avanos, is a town and district of Nevşehir Province in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey, located 18 km north of Nevşehir, the capital city of the province. It is situated within the historic and touristic region of Cappadocia. According to 2000 census, population of the district is 35,145 of which 12,288 live in the town of Avanos.

The old city of Avanos, whose name in ancient times was Venessa overlooks the longest river of Turkey, the Kızılırmak which also separates Avanos from the rest of Cappadocia.
The most famous historical feature of Avanos, which is still relevant and very visible today, is its production of earthenware pottery, it is also the most economic activity in the town. The ceramic trade in this district and its countless pottery factories date right back to the Hittites, and the ceramic clay from the red silt of the Kızılırmak has always been used.
Avanos Village, Cappadocia,
Avanos is a short bus trip from Goreme – the bus schedule is pasted in the Information center in Goreme bus stand and you need to catch the bus from behind the Tourist information center. Avanos does get its share of tour groups but is relatively quiet.
Since Avanos is famous for its pottery, there are quite a few shops…

don's buy plates in Avanos besides you could cut price excellence. Avanos is a beauty small town. peoples is not bad for help guest, but business man that sell plate is very sly, you must cut price 50% and then start to think about if you buy or not.
If you’re visiting the region of Cappadocia I recommend you visit the small village of Avanos. Avanos is considered the pottery capitol of the Cappadocian Region. North past the river, its streets and alleys are lined with shop after shop of beautiful pottery varying from traditional design to the lively colorful contemporary Turkish style paintings.
Adorable village to walk about and friendly villagers to say hi and chat. If you like clay pottery and art this is the place.
We found nice restaurants, bakeries, and affordable kepob places downtown without the help of a guidebook or a website. You'll require little guidance to navigate this town.
The food selection is not as wide as that which you'll find in Göreme, but restaurants in Avanos offer larger portions, interesting tastes, and good value.
Avanos is a pretty town and worth a walk around. Plenty of places to buy distinctive pottery, some of which is handthrown and handpainted and some of which is cast and stencilled. You can also try your hand at 'throwing' a pot. We all left having bought a variety of pieces, from something small to give friends to lovely feature…
Our guide drove us around wherever we wanted. He recommended many places and we visited them. Churches, ruins, old Christian underground cities. Places where pottery and jewelry are made. Avanos was part of this tour. Wonderful!!!!
