This was the one place i really wanted to go in Turkey, and it was not a let down. yes its crowded, yes you cant take pictures inside, yes its small.
We had a great time visiting the Virgin Mary's house. The way to the top of mt. Koressos is full of beautiful scenery, and the house itself is a piece of heaven, you feel a lot of peace and serenity from the moment you step inside.
Not much to look at and no photos are allowed but once inside it takes you back in time. A very humbling place, as most of the religious sites are.
From the moment our tou guide picked us up at the hotel until she dropped us in the afternoon she was helpful and flexible. It was a great tour planned to accommodate a hot day. Great value for money.
It is not really the house of Mary. Rather a small chapel build on the foundations where they think Mary has lived. Several popes have visited this place as well. It is near the Ephesus and not to be missed.
Even an atheist will be touched by the atmosphere of the place. Remember to dress appropriately. Good place to buy gifts to you super-catholic aunties.
Worth seeing just for the concept of seeing Mary’s house, but this site is so touristy it’s sad. It has been decorated inside with lots of Catholic relics, and a nun presides over the doorway. It takes 2 minutes to walk through.
