During our private Ephesus tour from Kusadasi Port, I was mostly impressed by our private guide Selcuk for he spoke fluently not only English but also Mandarin. He also could speak some Japanese, Korean, and French! In the States most people know only American English while people in the rest of the world know at least two or three languages. I asked him how he learned to speak so many languages and he told me he had first studied 4 years Chinese at university then later stayed in China for two years both for work and for learning Mandarin. As to the other languages, he said he had learned them while working at one of the biggest leather centers near Ephesus selling jackets to tourists from all of the world. In fact, I noticed that Turkish people have a knack for languages. I guess the touristic environment is the perfect language school.
